Nowadays Pope Gregory XIII (1572-1585) is mainly known for his calendar reform. With this reform, he introduced the regulation for leap years. This had become necessary since the Julian calendar differed more and more from the astronomical calendar. The difference of 10 days was cancelled by jumping forward from Thursday 4 October to Friday 15 October 1582. Even today, the Gregorian calendar is still named after Pope Gregory XIII. It should be noted that Gregory XIII also had the Vatican‘s Observatory set up, which still exists today. This golden guilder or scudo d' oro was minted in Ancona in 1575 in honour of the Holy Year. It shows on the reverse the Holy Gate and then the date of the Holy Year. This coin was part of a whole series of issues of different denominations for this important event. This scudo d' oro was the highest quality coin of its series and was minted in a very small edition. Only two exemplars of this type are known in Europe's coin cabinets today.
