Das schwedische Friedensmahl im Nürnberger Rathaussaal

Staatsarchiv Nürnberg

Description

After a painting by Joachim von Sandrart (1606-1688), Wolfgang Kilian (1581-1663) created a very high-quality copperplate print on two plates. In the festively decorated hall of the Nuremberg town hall, the Wittelsbach Count Palatine Charles Gustav, the future Swedish King Charles X Gustav of Sweden (r. 1654-1660), held a banquet. This banquet formed one of the high points of a congress, which took place between April 1649 and June 1650. After the conclusion of the peace treaties at Osnabrück and Münster, the Thirty Years War was de facto ended here. In Nuremberg, the severe problems of the demobilisation of the armies, of the payment of reparation money and of clearance of certain locations in the empire were first debated and finally solved on 16 June 1650.
