Description
The battle between Alexander the Great and the Persian king Darius III at Issus in the year 333 BC put a halt to the Persian invasion. Altdorfer shows the crucial moment: Alexander is victorious – Darius turns to flee. The painting is part of a specific historical cycle, which Duke Wilhelm IV von Bayern and his wife Jacobaea von Baden had probably commissioned in 1528 for the Münchner Residenz (Munich Residence).
