Description

The piano sonata was composed in 1831 while Richard Wagner (1813-1883) took lessons in composition with Theodor Weinlig, cantor and music director of the Leipzig Thomasschule (Thomas School). As a result of Weinlig's recommendation, the work dedicated to his teacher by the 18-year-old Wagner was published by Breitkopf & Härtel in 1832. Neither the opus number (nr. 1) nor the dedication to Weinlig that is mentioned for the Easter Mass 1832 in Breitkopf & Härtel's Verzeichnis neuer Musikalien are included in this autograph. The manuscript contains minor corrections in the first three movements and very extensive corrections in the fourth movement, frequently including changes to entire bars. Datum: 2016
