Variationen und Fuge über ein Thema von Mozart op. 132

Bayerische Staatsbibliothek

Description

The "Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Mozart", composed in 1914, are considered Max Reger's (1873-1916) most important orchestral composition. Reger himself conducted the enthusiastically celebrated world premiere in Wiesbaden on 8th January 1915. The theme is followed by eight variations and crowned by a double fugue. In the autograph score Reger entered the dynamic and agogic terms in his characteristic style with red ink. Equally characteristic for Reger are the massive deletions, e.g. here on page 22 and on the unnumbered sheet between pages 20 and 21, with the help of which he erased every single note of the cancelled passages.
