The work of Lew Nikolajewitsch Tolstoj (1828-1910) who descended from a Russian aristocratic family counts among the world classics of literature. He wrote the monumental novels "War and Peace" and "Anna Karenina". On occasion, Tolstoj worked on behalf of those persecuted politically and religiously and was also active as lay theologian. The dissemination of his ideas often called forth the resistance of political and ecclesiastical institutions. In the two autographs to the Munich jurist, politician and numismatist Robert Piloty (1863-1926), Tolstoj discusses the grave famine and Cholera epidemic in Russia during the years 1891 to 1892. He expresses his thanks for the money sent by Piloty and declared: "Für das Geld, dass so viele mitleidige russische und ausländische Leute uns geschickt haben, werden jetzt ungefär 10.000 Männer in verschiedenen Orten unterstützt. Man gibt in freien Küchen, die eingerichtet sind, Mittag und Abendbrod." (From the money that so many compassionate Russian and foreign people have sent us, now ca. 10.000 men in diverse places receive support. In free kitchens that have been instituted, lunch and dinner are being offered, 29.04.1892). The third autograph is a letter to the Jewish Slavist, founder of the "central association of German citizens of Jewish faith" and of the Berlin Schiller Theatre, Raphael Löwenfeld (1854-1910). Löwenfeld had visited Tolstoj twice in Jasnaja Poljana and was one of the first to translate his work into German; he was considered an intimate connoisseur and biographer of Tolstoj. Datum: 2016
