The Staatsgalerie im Neuen Schloss Schleißheim

The former summer palace of Elector Max Emanuel houses an outstanding collection of baroque paintings that complements the holdings of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. Important works of all European schools of the seventeenth and seventeenth centuries are represented here. The focus is on the Italian and Flemish paintings exhibited in the magnificent "Grande Galerie". In the northern part of the Great Gallery and in the adjacent rooms, works by Lodovico Carracci, Guercino, Carlo Saraceni, Luca Giordano, Carlo Dolci and Jacopo Amigoni are displayed; in the southern part and in the elector's apartments, among others, are works by Peter Paul Rubens, Anthonis van Dyck and David Teniers the Younger. The ground floor is dedicated to German, Dutch, French and Spanish painting; there, for example, the famous "Cycle of the Twelve Months" by Joachim von Sandrart and portraits by Joseph Vivien can be seen.

Architecture

Elector Max Emanuel (1662-1726) commissioned Schleißheim Castle to be built between 1701 and 1704 in accordance with designs by Enrico Zuccalli (1642-1724). It was completed by Joseph Effner (1687-1745). Important artists, such as Johann Baptist Zimmermann (1680-1758), designed the interior.

The Staatsgalerie at the Neues Schloss Schleißheim is affiliated to the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen (Bavarian State Painting Collections).
