Luther Holdings of the Landesbibliothek Coburg

The Luther holdings of the Landesbibliothek Coburg essentially originate with two collections: the Herzogliche Hof- und Staatsbibliothek (Ducal Court and State Libraries, P-Signatures) and the Lutherbibliothek (Luther library, Lu-Signatures).

In the case of the Hof- and Staatsbibliothek, we have to do with the core collection of today's Landesbibliothek which goes back to the sixteenth century.

The Lutherbibliothek was founded by Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1819–1861), prince consort of Queen Victoria of Great Britain (1819–1901, queen 1837–1901), to remember Martin Luther's stay in the Veste Coburg in 1530.

The original display collection was taken for reasons of conservation at the beginning of the 1950s from the Veste Coburg inside the Landesbibliothek. The Luthersammlung was extended thereafter (Lu + N.c.-Signatures, for example Lu-56,403). Rara-signatures as well refer to antiquarian purchases made during the twentieth century. In single cases, Luther prints originate from the Cas-Bestand (Cas holdings). This term refers to the historical library of the "sonderbare hohe landesschul" (particular high school of the duchy) founded in 1605 which developed into the present Gymnasium Casimirianum.
