The Universitätsbibliothek Augsburg

The Universitätsbibliothek Augsburg (University Library Augsburg) is a central institution of the university of Augsburg and the greatest academic library in the Swabian district of Bavaria. Its largest audience consists of the students, scholars and teachers of the University of Augsburg. All other users interested in the books, journals and additional media are welcome.

The holdings comprise the subjects of the humanities, the social sciences as well as selected disciplines of the natural sciences. The print media of c.2.1 million volumes may be accessed daily in four library buildings on campus and in one external building. Online supplies are continuously extended and the printed inventory is being added to.

The library was founded in 1970 but comprises several outstanding collections in the field of cultural history.

The most substantial and notable historical collection is the Oettingen-Wallerstein library, acquired in 1980. The princely family started to collect in the fifteenth century (more on the Oettingen-Wallerstein library may be found below).

The collection of rara (consisting of works created between 1600 and 1800), the library of the former Philosophisch-Theologische Hochschule Freising (Philosophical-Theological Seminary at Freising) and the library of the Stiftung Cassianeum (Foundation Cassianeum, Donauwörth) are of particular importance. Moreover, substantial collections of historical songbooks of both Christian confessions as well as of music in the synagogue were established. Collections with a particular emphasis on the twentieth century are the Thomas-Mann-Sammlung Klaus W. Jonas, the Sammlung Georg P. Salzmann "Bibliothek der verbrannten Bücher" (library of conflagrated books) and the archive of the photographer Erika Groth-Schmachtenberger.
