The Bayerisches Nationalmuseum

Founded in 1855 by King Maximilian II, the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum (Bavarian National Museum) ranks among the most significant museums of art and cultural history in Europe. The core stock of artifacts originates in the art collection of the Wittelsbach dynasty. Planned and erected by Gabriel von Seidl in the style of historism, this building with its unique historical interiors is one of the most inventive and significant museums built in the years around 1900.

Going on a museum tour of great variety, visitors can exploit the occidental periods of art from the late antiquity to the era of Art Nouveau. Next to master pieces of sculpture and painting, the exhibits comprise precious works of ivory and goldsmithing, tapestry, furniture, weapons and most exquisite artifacts of porcelain. The world famous crib collection shows over 60 illusionistically arranged nativity scenes with a variety of figurines carved between 1700 and 1850 in Naples, Sicily and the Alpine region.
