Jochaufsatz mit Zügelführungsring

Archäologische Staatssammlung München

Description

The singular yoke attachment, which served as a ring for bridle reins, once belonged to a magnificent chariot in the oppidum of Manching. Above a short frame with a base sits a u-shaped attachment, the ends of which are formed in the shape of water birds. A somewhat larger u-shaped attachment is soldered onto the first at a right angle. The ends of the second attachment are decorated with bovine heads the eyes of which are globular, so are the tips of the horns. The latter are typical for the depiction of bulls in the late Celtic period. Extraordinary for the late Celtic period is the combination of bull and water bird.
