Messe Hob. XXII,13 (Schöpfungsmesse)

Bayerische Staatsbibliothek

Description

Joseph Haydn's 13th mass (Hob. XXII, 13) of 1801 (1732-1809) is the penultimate of the six large masses commissioned by Prince Nicholas II Esterhazy (1765-1833). Its not authentic epithet of Schöpfungsmesse (Creation Mass) refers to the solo bass voice's singing the words "qui tollis peccata mundi" in the Gloria to a melody from Haydn's oratorio The Creation, i.e."The dew dropping morn, O how she quickens all!" from duet nr. 30. The autograph score presented here is a fair copy with only a few corrections. The voices of the horns, trumpets and timpani found no room on the 14-line music paper of the score. As was customary at the time, Haydn wrote it down on a supplementary score that was not preserved. Datum: 2016
