Description

On 10 December 1910, Paul Heyse (1830-1914) was honoured as the first German poet with the Nobel Prize for Literature. The document of the awards comes from his estate and consists of a foldout binder that is covered in blue leather with a colourful Art Nouveau garland. The text of the document is inside on small rectangular fields before the cityscape of Stockholm, illustrated by the Swedish architect, painter and draughtsman August (Agi) Lindegren (1858-1927). An added parchment sheet contains the German translation of the Swedish honorary text. The festive speech on the occasion of the award was held by the Swedish lyricist David af Wirsén, who represented a similarly conservative idea of poetry as Heyse and had signed on the document at the bottom right. The prize was considered as recognition for Heyse's collected works. The Swedish Nobel prize committee understood the award as a sign of homage for Heyse's complete artistry supported by the ideal perception during his activity as lyricist, dramaturg, novelist and poet of world famous novels. Not least through the translation of his works, he enjoyed in Sweden a high degree of recognition. Datum: 2016
