Luxurious furniture from Bavarian castles

The Bayerische Schlösserverwaltung (Bavarian Palace Department) owns one of the world’s most important collections of furniture from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. The collection is of the highest cultural and historical importance not only to represent interior design and court ceremonies at the princely courts of Bavaria, but also to illustrate achievements in the history of technology and craftsmanship. It includes both pieces of furniture made by artisans from Bavaria and pieces imported from the international centres of furniture production, such as Paris. The international networking of Bavarian court culture and its impact on the development of local artisanship thus becomes evident.

Furniture digitised as 3D animations and films attest to the beholder the changeability and the mechanics of the furniture. 2D-digitised furniture illustrates further objects.

Special emphasis is placed on the furniture collection of the Residenz München (Munich Residence), the palace of the Bavarian electors and kings, as well as the Wittelsbach castles in Nymphenburg and Schleißheim. In order to show the regional spectrum of courtly interior design, additional pieces from Bayreuth, the residential city of the Margraviate of Brandenburg-Bayreuth, and from the Residence Ansbach, seat of the Margraves of Brandenburg-Ansbach, will be presented. These pieces are representative for the furnishings as part of court culture in (Hohenzollern) Franconia during the eighteenth century.
