Flottenadmiralsstab aus dem Besitz von Herzog Alfred von Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha (1844-1900)

Description

Made of pure gold, this baton lacks any functionality. Crowned by a massive statuette of St George and decorated with appliqués of the lion passant on blue velvet, this precious piece was meant exclusively as a gift of honour. Through the inclusion of patron saint and heraldic animal, it presents symbols of the British nation. Queen Victoria, according to the inscription on the panel at the base, on 22 June 1897 dedicated this gift of honour to Alfred, the "... DEAR SON ADMIRAL OF THE FLEET H: R: H: THE DUKE OF SAXE-COBURG AND GOTHA..." The occasion for the award was the Queen's diamond jubilee on the throne, which she celebrated on that day. With the title "Admiral of the Fleet" Alfred had achieved the highest rank in the Royal Navy by 1893. In total, the baton of an admiral of the fleet was awarded only five times: the first time it went to the Duke of Wellington in 1813, the last one was bestowed to Alfred.
