Description

Emperor Louis the Bavarian confirmed the foundation of the Heilig-Geist-Spital (Holy Ghost Hospital) in Nuremberg, put the hospital under the protection of the empire and granted the hospital and its inmates the use of communal goods and estates of the imperial city. The imperial chancellery with its specialised scribes and illuminators under Emperor Louis the Bavarian took the art of the illuminated state document to a level never reached before. Apart from merely decorative elements, frequently motifs of a highly symbolical value were employed.
