Hochstift Freising Archiv: Cozroh-Codex

Description

The Cozroh manuscript contains the earliest mention of a document from the bishopric of Freising and is one of the most important sources on the early mediaeval history of Bavaria. The over 700 texts of so-called “Traditionsnotizen” (entries concerning donations and privileges) date to the time between 744 and 848. They were copied from 824 into the book of donations under the bishops Hitto (811-835) and Erchanbert (836-854) by the head of the episcopal chancery, Cozroh, as well as by further scribes. The codex consists of three parts, of which originally only two had been planned, i.e. a cartulary of donations from the times of the bishops Ermbert (730[?]-748), Joseph (748-764), Arbeo (764-783) and Atto (783-811) as well as a second one with the donations and processual protocols under bishop Hitto (811-835). In the third part, written after 835, the cartulary develops into a register of legal documents leaving the chancery under Hitto’s successor, bishop Erchanbert (836-854), which continues up to the year 848.
