The Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte

The Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte (Centre of Bavarian History) was established in 1978 in Augsburg and has been a branch of the Bayerische Staatsministerium für Bildung und Kultus, Wissenschaft und Kunst (Bavarian State Ministry of Education, Science and the Arts) since 1998.

The duties of the Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte include:

  • Providing access to the historical and cultural diversity of Bavaria for all classes of the population, especially for the younger generation, in all parts of Bavaria
  • Presenting the state structure of Bavaria and illustrating the development of state and society until present times in the context of history, politics and culture
  • Enhancing and maintaining the historical awareness in general and thereby exploiting the historical heritage as a basis for the future of the Free State of Bavaria in its German and European context.

These duties are mainly fulfilled by organizing exhibitions – the annually presented Bavarian State Exhibitions as well as touring exhibitions throughout the state –, by publications, lectures, colloquies, media presentations, time witness projects and the creation of a picture library about the history of Bavaria.

In 2009, the Bavarian cabinet commissioned the Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte with the project for a Museum der Bayerischen Geschichte (Museum of Bavarian History) in Regensburg, for which it is developing a concept and assembling a collection.
