The place of discovery of this magnificent bronze statuette of a boar is unknown. Possibly, it originated in south-eastern Europe as seems confirmed by comparable pieces. The boar has a filigree high silver neck as well as eyes that are edged by a circular silver inlay and were perhaps once inserted with glass. Characteristically is that the boar is depicted in a stance of aggression: with legs stretched out forward and with a slightly lowered head as well as with ears put forward and a raised neck. The pictorial motif may be traced back to Greek pictorial traditions. The boar is a symbol for strength and invincibility.
